Top 10 ways of using Garlic

Top 10 ways of using Garlic

Here are my favourite top 10 ways of using garlic. Garlic has been proven to have many health and medicinal benefits. For thousands of years, ancient civilization have been using garlic as medicine and food. It is hence imperative that we incorporate garlic as much as possible in our diet in many different ways as much as possible.

Roasted Garlic
My favourite garlic recipe is the Roasted Garlic, where garlic plays the star ingredient. I don’t know who first invented the Roasted Garlic recipe, but it began showing up at trendy restaurants at about 10 years ago. And boy, was that ever a pleasant surprise! I couldn’t imagine that you could eat garlic in such quantities. Basically, the appetizer plate consisted of whole garlic roasted in olive oil, tasty, sweet and buttery soft and spreadable over baguette bread.

Garlic roasted with olive oil

Simply chop off the top of the garlic clove,
peel off the paper skins,
drizzle with olive oil,
sprinkle with sea salt,
wrap the cloves in aluminim foil.
roast in the oven at 400 degree F for 1 hour.
Let cool and serve.
The garlic will be so soft, you can get the meat out by squeezing the bottom of the clove.
The result is so good, I suggest that you can do this whenever you are cooking something in the oven.

Garlic as pizza topping
The first time I had garlic as a pizza topping was at a pizza restaurant. Whole roasted garlic was included along with pepperoni, olive, red pepper, mushrooms, etc as a topping. Once again, what a delightful treat. You can use whole roasted garlic or sliced garlic slivers as pizza topping.

Garlic as a pizza topping is usually served in trendy and upscale restaurants. It is seldom offered in fast-food pizza joints.

Garlic Butter
Making garlic butter is actually very simple.
Take a block of unsalted butter, softened
8 cloves of garlic, chopped fine
sprigs of parsley, chopped fine
whip them together using a hand mixer
roll into a log, and wrap in a plastic. Refrigerate.

Spread garlic butter over baguette and toast in oven at 350 degrees Celsius for 10 minutes and you have crisp and toasty garlic bread. Best eaten immediately.

Garlic Pesto Sauce
Check out our parsley pesto sauce and follow the same recipe, with garlic as an added ingredient. You can make this sauce ahead and keep in the fridge for up to 3 weeks, alternatively you can freeze the garlic pesto sauce to prolong its life.

Marinated Garlic

1/2 tsp dried basil
1/2 tsp dried thyme
1/2 tsp onion seeds
Put together in a jar and refrigerate for 7 days, and you have your marinated garlic that you can serve along with pickles, antipasto or the likes.

Garlic Infused Olive Oil
To make garlic infused olive oil, place a few garlic cloves in olive oil, and heat slowly in the stove for the first 15 minutes, then allow to simmer for another 35 minutes. Garlic infused olive oil can be used for salad vinigarette dressings or to flavor pasta sauces, meat and soup. The garlic infused oil can keep in fridge for up to 3 weeks. Mix with balsamic vinegar and you have a very nice dip for your bread.

Cut up some garlic cloves and toast in frying pan with oil until brown. Then add (day-old white rice) and sautee together. It is important that you use day-old rice, because fresh cooked rice contain a lot of moisture.

Parsley Cilantro Chutney
2 bunches Parsley, Cilantro or mixture
Juice from 1/2 lemon
5 cloves garlic
1/2 onion
2 tbsp water
2 tbsp vegetable oil
Blend the above together to make a chutney.
Add some yogurt and you have a dip.
Note: Cilantro is a good parsley substitute. There is always the issue of parsley versus cilantro. Which herb to use for what dishes. For a chutney, cilantro does well as a parsley substitute. However, it is not a good substitute for sauteed parsley dishes, because cilantro does not have the robust fibrous crunchy texture of parsley.
